Out of the Dust

Out of the Dust

Welcome to this month’s Literature Circle Activity!

This month we will be reading the historical fiction novel, “Out of the Dust,” by Karen Hesse.

Sneak Peak:

This Newbery Medal winner takes place during the Oklahoma Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. Written in a "free verse," journal format, the main character Billie Jo relates the tragic realities of surviving years of dust storms.

Directions

Every week four different students will be assigned Literature Circle Roles. Those students will be responsible for leading the blog discussion for the week. All other students will be required to post a minimum of two comments during the week.

Remember, the purpose of this activity is to create a blog discussion, so if you are responsible for a Literature Circle Role, then you must submit an initial post for each chapter on Tuesday, and your final comment must be posted by the Friday of each week.

All others must post their first comment by Wednesday, and their final comment by Friday.

All students are encouraged to post comments more than twice during the week as this will add greatly to the discussion.

Please check the due dates on each chapter's post title.

As you read each chapter, think about the following:

  1. Characters that influence Billie Jo, and what does she learn from them.
  2. Defining incidences, and how do they affect her.
  3. Change: How does Billie Jo change and grow?
  4. Acts of Courage: How does Billie Jo overcome her fears?
